DHS Redesignates Syria for Temporary Protected Status

On January 5, 2015, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) redesignated Syria for temporary protected status (TPS) due to the ongoing civil strife. This redesignation will permit Syrian nationals who were eligible for TPS status but were not in the United States during the initial designation period to now apply for TPS and its attendant benefits. Individuals granted TPS cannot be detained by DHS on the basis of their immigration status in the United States. They can also obtain employment authorization documents and may be granted travel authorization. Filing for TPS does not impact ones eligibility for other immigration benefits, such as asylum. The initial 180-day registration period for new applicants will run between January 5, 2015, and July 6, 2015. If you or someone you know is a Syrian national who may be eligible for TPS, please contact a Johnstone Adams immigration attorney as soon as possible to discuss your case.
